We are in the midst of the flu and cold season, so it’s time to arm yourself and loved ones by strengthening your immune system through natural remedies. We are all exposed to viruses and bacteria every day so why is it that some people get the flu while others do not?
I believe that flu season should really be called “stress season.” Our body is designed to self heal and regulate every function; however, when we become burdened with the stress of the holiday season, poor diet and lack of exercise, we open our body up to the flu, colds and illness. Your body’s immune system was created to rid your body of unwanted viruses and bacteria so do not let them take hold to begin with. The answer does not lie in a drug or a shot, but inside of you!
Here are my TOP FIVE ways to help boost your immune system and support your body’s innate healing power.
- Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 is a potent immune booster and essential for normal body function. In the fall and winter we have less sun exposure so it’s important to boost your vitamin D levels. Not sure how much to take? First, get your Vitamin D test (ask for the 25-OH test) and then consult your wellness doctor to know how much is right for you. A study in 2010 showed children taking 1,200 IU’s of vitamin D3 per day were shown to be 42 percent less likely to contract influenza.
- Oil of Oregano
Oil of Oregano contains natural compounds that combat viral, bacterial, parasitic and fungal infections. The main ingredient, Carvacrol, has shown promising results with not only killing viruses and bacteria, but helping stabilize insulin levels, reduce inflammation and swelling, stabilize blood pressure, and help in cancer treatments. I take 10 drops in 2oz of water, twice per day. You can also add five drops in your palm with olive or coconut oil, mix together, and rub on the soles of your feet.
- Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a primary antioxidant of the body and is necessary for a strong immune system. Taking as a preventative measure has shown more success in helping with cold and flu. Aim for 1 to 3 grams per day for supplementation but do not forget about your diet! Fruits and green, leafy vegetables are high in Vitamin C.
- Healing Cuisine Tincture
This is a wonderful creation from the website Healing Cuisine By Elise. This is an immune boosting tea that will definitely give you a kick back towards good health. I like to do this at the first sign of illness. In a large mug add:
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 bag of green tea and/or Echinacea tea
- 1 tsp freshly chopped ginger root
- 3 Tbsp raw organic apple cider vinegar (I prefer the Bragg’s brand)
- 1 spoonful of raw, local honey
- ¼ tsp of cayenne pepper
- 2 garlic cloves
Let this steep for 5-6 minutes and then enjoy!
- Chiropractic Adjustments
Did you know that having an unhealthy spine or spinal misalignment could decrease your immune system? Your brain and nervous system control every function in your body. The nervous system and immune system are hard-wired and work together. By taking care of your spine and nervous system you will boost your body’s ability to naturally detoxify and heal.
