Do you want to establish healthy habits this new year? From improving your gut health and digestion, to losing weight, to finding a healthy and enjoyable exercise routine, you have the power to make your health goal a reality, and I want to support you every step of the way.
Here are my top 4 tips to achieving your health goals, whether it be for the New Year or if you’re reading this article later on. I use these tips with my patients routinely to enhance their level of success.
4 Tips to Achieve Your 2020 Health Goals
1. Set Attainable Goals
The first step is setting attainable goals. If you have a big goal, break it up into smaller, more manageable goals that add up to a large achievement. When you know what you want to achieve, it will help you find a clear path to get there. No matter what it’s for – weight loss, improved overall wellness, increase physical activity – you need to set goals for yourself that you can break down into steps. You can then assign deadlines to each manageable goal to hold yourself accountable.
2. Record Your Goals & Document Your Progress
Putting your goals down on paper is the first step to committing to your goals. Take it a step further by posting your goals in a visual spot in your home, perhaps your bedroom wall, bathroom mirror, or at your desk; somewhere you’ll see and re-read your goals to yourself daily.
I also recommend keeping a daily or weekly journal of your progress along the way. Note when you have accomplishments or hard days. Being able to look back on your progress when you go through a rough day has been shown to help you stay committed to your goal longer.
3. Relieve Your Stress
Stress is more than a feeling. Stress response in the body releases hormones, and when you’re in a constant state of stress, can lead to a weakened immune system, raise blood pressure, and cause a myriad of symptoms. The stress you’re under can be emotional, mental, or physical – physical injury, sleep deprivation, exposure to toxins, leaky gut, or eating a diet full of inflammatory foods. When living in a state of stress, you will be less likely to follow through with the steps required to reach your health goals.
On the other hand, relieving constant stress can help you achieve health goals. When you practice stress relief, you can prevent chronic stress-related conditions – headaches, digestive issues, heart attacks, fatigue – as well as a range of immune-related illnesses.
4. Find a Support System
A sense of belonging has multiple strong effects on your emotions and mental function, including lower anxiety and greater happiness. A lack of relationships and support systems is linked to lower general health and well-being. Maintaining relationships with people who understand, respect, and support your health goals makes all the difference.
Finding a partner who shares the same health goals with you or a family member or friend who you can check in with as you make progress can be excellent in holding you accountable.
